The Honey Badger found in arid grasslands and savannahs is a fierce carnivore with an extremely keen sense of smell. It is well know for its snake killing abilities. It grabs a snake including pythons and venomous species behind the head in its jaws and kills it before eating it.
They also like eating honey and bee larvae, hence their name. Their thick skins and fur protects them from bee stings.
Sometimes a bird called the honey guide, leads honey badgers to beehives. When the badger leaves the hive all broken up, the little bird feeds on the beeswax, which they can digest easily.
The honey badger also eats insects, reptiles, birds and fruits. The animals are also adapted to digging out small rodents. They have a powerful and stocky bodies, with no external ears, a broad muscular back, bow legged front legs and formidable fore claws that may reach 40mm in length.
The animals are the world’s most fearless animals. They live for five to eight years in the wild. Females give birth to one cub after two months gestation. Adults weigh upto 14 kilos.
