Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a huge arid, desert area in southwestern, Sub-Saharan Africa extending 900,000 km² (362,500 sq. mi.), covering much of Botswana and parts of Namibia and South Africa. The huge Kalahari Deserthas been a subject of much debate as to what the Kalahari actually is and what defines its borders - indeed, Kalahari sand extends all the way up into the Congo.
The Kalahari Desert is the southernmost desert in Africa, and the geography is a portion of desert and a plateau. The Kalahari supports some animals and plants because most of it is not a true desert. There are small amounts of rainfall and the summer temperature is very high.
In the protected areas game tends to be very good: lion, cheetah and leopard prey on the arid area species like springbok, gemsbok and red hartebeest. Bird watching can be amazing: look out for great raptors all year round and an influx of interesting migrants in the wet summer months.
