The Maasai of East Africa are the most photographed and famous of all of Africa’s tribal people. When it comes to tourism they are as important to an East African safari as lions and elephants.
When most foreigners talk of African culture they are usually refering to the likes of the maasai.

Although development through tourism has begun to change some aspects of their lives, and even some maasai men and women have being able to scale the corporate and political ladder, generally the majority of them have nevertheless manage to live a life close to the land and their traditional culture. Mauritius history and Culture

Comparing it to the rest of the world, Mauritius is a fairly young country with the first known or recorded sighting of these group of Islands that make up Mauritius made in AD 975 by an Arab explorer Hassan ibn Ali. At the time he and his fellow explorers deemed it not worthy of settlement, because there were no inhabitants to trade with or convert to Islam.

The Portuguese too stumbled onto the Island and after dropping anchor off the shore of Mauritius too voted against settling there because the island offered no possibilities of trade, plunder, or winning any catholic converts. The Portuguese however left behind some pigs, goats and cattle in hope that these would provide food for their return if they were able to survive and reproduce. Read more
